What Happened When I Asked AI About a Local Business Networking Group

Generating-AI-Signals-and-Training-AI

I recently built a new website for a networking organization I belong to in Coeur d’Alene called Elite Business Connections. After launching the site, I decided to ask Google Gemini a simple question to see what it already knew about the organization.

Instead of describing Elite Business Connections, Gemini began recommending other networking organizations.

That response highlighted an important lesson for every small business owner.

If AI Doesn’t Know Your Business, It Will Recommend Someone Else

The way people search for businesses is changing rapidly. Instead of typing keywords into a search engine, more people are asking questions like:

  • “What’s a good business networking group in Coeur d’Alene?”
  • “Can you recommend a trusted chiropractor near Hayden?”
  • “Who builds WordPress websites for small businesses?”

AI assistants can only recommend businesses they understand. If your business has little information available online—or inconsistent information—AI will often recommend a competitor instead.

Teaching AI About Your Business

To see how Gemini learns, I directed it to the new Elite Business Connections website and began asking detailed questions about the organization.

Rather than simply asking for a summary, I explored topics such as:

  • The organization’s mission and vision.
  • How weekly meetings work.
  • The referral process.
  • Membership benefits.
  • The chapter structure.
  • The overall purpose of the organization.

As the conversation continued, Gemini began building a much richer understanding of Elite Business Connections.

When I finally asked:

“Please give me a full description of what you know about Elite Business Connections.”

the response was dramatically more complete than when we started.

Gemini described the organization as a relationship-focused networking group built around intentional referrals. It correctly explained the group’s mission, weekly meeting format, membership process, exclusive business categories, and many of the benefits members receive by participating.

While not every detail was perfect, the difference was significant. AI had gone from knowing almost nothing about the organization to providing a detailed overview based largely on information published on the website.

The Bigger Lesson

This exercise wasn’t really about Gemini.

It demonstrated how today’s AI assistants discover, organize, and present information about businesses.

As AI search becomes more common, businesses that consistently publish helpful, well-organized, trustworthy information are far more likely to be recommended when people ask for professional advice.

Those that don’t may simply disappear from the conversation.

AI Search Optimization Is Becoming Essential

Traditional SEO is still important, but it is no longer the entire picture.

Today’s businesses should also consider how AI assistants understand their expertise, services, experience, and community involvement. That requires more than adding keywords to a website. It requires building a clear knowledge system that helps AI accurately understand who you are, what you do, and why customers should trust you.

At Main Street WebWorks, helping businesses improve their AI visibility is one of our newest areas of focus. We work with clients to organize their knowledge, strengthen their online authority, and improve how AI assistants understand and recommend their businesses.

If your business depends on search-generated leads, now is the time to prepare for the next generation of search.
